Libekoo is a random chat site, free of charge, built and hosted in France. Most of the people who use it write in French, which is exactly what makes it useful if you want to talk to French people online or get some free conversation practice: here, French is the default rather than the exception.
It runs in your browser, with no sign-up and no app. Choose a nickname, begin with a one-to-one text chat, and try video only once you feel ready. Libekoo is for people aged 18 or older.

Libekoo is built and run from France, with French speakers in mind. The group rooms have French names, the question of the evening is written in French, and most conversations happen in French. The interface itself comes in seven languages, English included.
The community is small, and we'd rather say so plainly: Libekoo can't promise that a native French speaker will be online whenever you are. At quiet hours you may wait, or be paired with someone who would rather speak English. Who you get is random.
Text chat is the easiest way in: you can reread a sentence, look up a word, and nobody hears your accent. Once you've said all you wanted to say, Next pairs you with someone new. Video is a separate mode with its own queue, so switching from text to video means a new random person.
On video, Reveal mode is on by default. Both images start blurred and sharpen step by step, fully clear after about 90 seconds or 12 messages, whichever comes first. Either of you can propose revealing sooner, or switch the mode off. For a learner, those blurred first seconds are useful: you are listening to French before anyone is looking at anyone.
Not ready for one-to-one? The group rooms, such as Le Café or Musique, are French chat rooms: pick a nickname to enter, then follow the conversation for a while before you write anything.
Saying so in your first message sets expectations: the other person knows why your sentences are short, and can slow down, or skip.
Lines you can copy: “Salut ! J'apprends le français, désolé pour les fautes.” (Hi! I'm learning French, sorry for the mistakes.) “Tu peux écrire plus simplement, s'il te plaît ?” (Could you write more simply, please?) “Comment on dit … en français ?” (How do you say … in French?) Then ask something concrete, like “Il fait quel temps chez toi ?” (What's the weather like where you are?), which gives more to work with than “ça va ?”.
Expect the informal tu rather than vous: it is the norm on a random chat, and Libekoo's own prompts use it. Expect abbreviations too, such as slt (salut), cv (ça va), mdr (the French lol) or tkt (don't worry). Our glossary of French chat abbreviations explains the common ones, in French.
Before you start, open Options and type a few interests, separated by commas. They are a soft preference, never a filter: when several people are waiting at the same moment, Libekoo leans, all else being equal, towards whoever shares the most interests with you, and if nobody shares any, you are paired anyway.
Interests are compared word for word (capital letters don't matter), so add the spellings people actually type: “français”, “francais” and “french”. With a small community this tips the odds rather than guaranteeing anything. There is no language filter: the pairing doesn't know which language you speak.
Every evening at 9 PM Paris time, Libekoo asks its community to come online at the same hour. If you can only try once, try then. From 9 to 10 PM, both people in a text chat also receive the same question of the evening, written in French: a ready-made exercise.
For most of the year, 9 PM in Paris is 8 PM in London, 3 PM in New York and Toronto, 2 PM in Chicago and noon in Los Angeles. Because Europe and North America change their clocks on different weekends, the Live falls an hour later in North America (4 PM in New York, 1 PM in Los Angeles) for two or three weeks in March and for one week from the last Sunday of October. The calendar reminder offered on the site is set to Paris time, so your calendar adjusts on its own.
Libekoo is a random chat, not a language course: no lessons, no tutors, no levels, no organised exchange where someone owes you half an hour of French. The person on the other side came for a conversation; some will enjoy helping, others will press Next, and both are fair. You can do the same whenever a conversation goes nowhere.
Libekoo is for people aged 18 or older. Every one-to-one conversation has a Report button; reports are reviewed by a person on the team, and once you report someone, the two of you aren't paired again for 24 hours. An automatic word filter also blocks some messages, in English as well as French.
Calls run peer-to-peer, encrypted as the WebRTC standard requires, and Libekoo does not record them. The one exception is a report made during a call: it carries a still image of the moment, kept for 30 days and visible only to administrators. One-to-one text messages are deleted automatically after 90 days; until then they can be checked when someone reports a conversation. And as on any site, what you never type can't travel: surname, street, phone, social accounts.
No. Libekoo is a young site with a small, mostly French-speaking community. Your best chance is during Libekoo Live, from 9 to 10 PM Paris time. If nobody is free one-to-one, the waiting screen suggests a group room while your search keeps running.
No. There is no language filter, and free use doesn't include a country filter. Adding “français” as an interest is the closest thing: a soft preference, never a guarantee.
Yes. Text chat, video chat and the group rooms are free, with no time limit, no account and no card. There are no ads either.
No. Text chat needs neither a camera nor a microphone. Video chat asks for camera access only when you press Start; without a camera, the other person sees a black screen and you can still type in the chat panel.
The automatic word filter covers English as well as French. When you report someone, you pick a reason from a list and can add a few words of your own, in English if you prefer; every report is reviewed by a person on the team.
